Types Of Hair Extensions

There are many different types of hair extension methods and it's important to understand the difference between all of them before deciding which ones are the best fit for your hair. As you read along below, we will share each method with you as well as what is required for care and how long you can expect them to last.

1. Hand Tied Hair Extensions

Hand Tied Hair Extensions or Sewn In extensions are currently the most in demand.  Made popular by Chrissy Rasmussen of Habit Salon, she created her specific technique called Habit Hand Tied Extensions. Chrissy and her salon team are big fans of our Iles Formula products as they deliver the most high performance nurture that extensions especially need.

The Iles Formula Signature Collection are ideal for extensions and will keep them knot and tangle free from the very first use, not to mention the sumptuous, silky texture they deliver to the hair.

Hand Tied Extensions are also one of the better techniques right now, as your hair has minimal points of contact with the wefts. It provides the healthiest end result, that can be worn for extended periods of time.

HOW LONG DO THEY LAST?

Hand tied extensions are a great option because once they are installed, you literally will not have to have them refreshed for 6-8 weeks depending on your daily routines and how fast your hair grows.  Occasionally a section may loosen, if this happens, your stylist will have you come in and adjust it for you.  Other than that, they are pretty low maintenance. On your "move up" visit, you can have your hair colored the same day if necessary.

2.  Tape In Hair Extensions

Tape In Hair Extensions are another popular method of hair extensions.  Many people choose tape in extensions because they are quite suitable for most hair types and textures and are relatively fast and easy to install.  People often ask "How Long Do Tape In Extensions Last? If cared for properly, they too can last up to 6-8 weeks.

It's important not to go much longer than that, as that is when damage and issues can occur with the hair.

Special note on tape extensions ... just remember to avoid any conditioner in the root area where the tape is. In our opinion, washing everyday with Tape In Extensions is not ideal as the water mixed with the products and styling tools can wear on the adhesive of the tape and potentially cause them to slide.  It's very important with tape in extensions to avoid using products with oil as this can cause the adhesive to wear faster.

HOW LONG DO THEY LAST?

Tape in extensions can last anywhere from 4-8 weeks.  The reason they potentially need to be maintained sooner than other types of extensions is that the tape is very sensitive to products.  You will get a better idea when you are actually wearing them as to how long you can go between maintenance visits but this is a general guideline.

3.  Fusion & PreBonded Hair Extensions

Fusion Hair Extensions or Pre Bonded Hair Extensions are methods where a small bundle of hair secured with a keratin bond is fused to your natural hair with a heated tool.  This method has been around for some time, but it is important to know that it is not recommended for all hair types.

The reason is that since it is working with very small bundles of hair at a time, the hair needs to be fused to the vast majority of the hair.  Due to the fact that there are so many points of contact, the natural hair is under a great deal of stress which in turn can cause damage and breakage.  Many like this type of extension because it tends to feel very natural, but it is important to be sure your hair type can handle this method.

HOW LONG DO THEY LAST?

You can go longer in between with this method of extension.   Typically you can wait 8-12 weeks before having to see your stylist, but they actually take much longer to install and maintain.  You can expect 3-4 hours at least with each visit and this does not include if you are coloring your hair on the same visit.

4.  MicroLink Hair Extensions

Microlink hair extensions are small sections of hair that are applied to natural hair with a bead lined with silicone. It is then clamped to the natural hair to hold the extension hair in place. This method does not use glue so it can be more gentle on the hair.

However, if the bead is not clamped to the hair properly this can cause damage to the natural hair.  Just like the Fusion extensions, there are more points of contact to the natural hair which can also cause damage.  For this reason, it is not suitable for all hair types. If you have fine hair or bleached hair, you should look into other methods for best results.

HOW LONG DO THEY LAST?

Microlink hair extensions can last about 8-12 weeks.  You may be able to stretch this a bit longer, however, you will need to see how your hair does and discuss this with your stylist. With all hair extensions, the better you care for them, the longer they last.  You can expect each visit to last 3-4 hours or more if you are coloring your hair the same day.

5.  Clip In & Halo Hair Extensions

Clip In and Halo hair extensions are hair extensions that you can buy on your own and add length to your hair on a day to day basis.  You will use them when you want to add length and take them out in the evening before bed.  They do not require a professional and may be a good start if you are considering hair extensions. You will be able to get an idea of whether or not you are going to enjoy having the length.  Below you will see the two different types.

Be sure your are using a proper detangling brush for your extensions. Brush in sections starting at the nape of neck working towards the top. Hold each section of hair in the middle while brushing it out to place less stress on the roots.  When it's time for bed, braid your hair or sleep with it in a bun on top of your head.  This will prevent the hair from tangling overnight while you are tossing around in your sleep.
