Hair is a thing of magic – it’s our best friend and our best accessory. But sometimes – if we ignore it or mistreat it – hair can also become our worst enemy. More often than not, this happens because of a lack of understanding of what our hair needs. After all, trying to figure out our hair is not the easiest task, especially when it comes to intricate factors like how hair reacts to heat and water. Fear not! We’re here to help you better understand what your hair needs, so that you don’t have to fight with your hair ever again!

One key factor that is often overlooked when it comes to hair is porosity. What exactly is porosity, you might ask? In this journal, we dive into this important topic, and help break down All You Need To Know About Hair Porosity.

What is Hair Porosity?

Hair porosity is, put simply, what we use to describe how porous (or absorbent) a hair strand is. Understanding the porosity of your hair is crucial because it helps you determine how your hair reacts to foreign substances, like water, shampoo, or oils. Knowing hair porosity can make a huge difference in the way you care for your hair, how you apply your products, and how you expect treatments such as hair dying to affect your hair.

There are three types of hair porosity, which translate to how well your hair can accept and hold foreign substances:

  • Low porosity means products are not easily absorbed by the hair, which makes the hair itself feel dense and heavy.
  • Medium porosity is, as the name suggests, somewhere in the middle, allowing the hair to effectively absorb and retain moisture, which means it often requires the least amount of care and treatment. Most hair starts out with a medium or low porosity level and gradually becomes more porous as damage occurs.
  • High porosity means the hair is prone to frizzing. This type of porosity is often found in color-treated or damaged hair because chemicals have stripped the hair strand of its structure.

How To Identify Your Hair’s Porosity?

First, shampoo the hair squeaky clean, but don’t condition it just yet! It is important to avoid conditioning the hair for this test, because conditioner is soaked up by the hair,  and will thus interfere with the results. After your hair is all cleaned up, do not blow dry your hair – instead, allow it to air dry. In the meantime, fill a medium to large bowl full of water.

When your hair is fully dried, grab a strand of hair, place it into the water and observe! If your hair…

  • Immediately floats to the top, it means you have low porosity hair.
  • Remains suspended in the middle of the bowl, you have medium porosity hair.
  • Sinks to the bottom of the bowl, it means you have highly porous hair.
