Iles Formula Hair Talk is pleased to introduce you to Jay Kushner from the iconic Joseph Cozza Salon in San Francisco. Read what he has to say about our hairdressing industry today.
IF: Tell us what you think is the biggest challenge in hairdressing today?
Keeping up high standards of strong educational foundations and creativity for young hairdressers and providing “full service” for clients.
IF: What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?
Using my knowledge, expertise and creativity to show someone just how great they can look and feel.
IF: Why did you choose the path of hairdressing and was it easy to fall into this work?
For me it was serendipitous…after a previous career in the fur industry fizzled out, I took the advice of a salon owner who thought I would do well in the beauty business and enrolled in beauty school…the rest is history! I’ve worked very hard to get where I am today and continue to do so.
IF: If you had not made the decision to be a hairdresser what would you have been?
Probably a therapist of some sort.
IF: What is your greatest strength?
My people skills for sure.
IF: Your favorite hairdressing tools?
IF: Tell us about your relationship with Iles Formula. How you discovered us and which formula is your favorite?
Our owner Blake McCall introduced us to the line and I LOVE every product! I love the weightless, smooth texture it gives compromised hair. The smell and packaging are wonderful too. (except for not being able to see how much product is in the bottle)
IF: What was your worst hair moment and why…. privately or on set/stage or in the salon?
Cutting a man’s ear was definitely my worst moment…but don’t tell anybody!
IF: If you could style anyone’s hair, who would it be and why?
Stevie Nicks…I love her but she needs a major makeover.
IF: Where do you pull hair inspiration from?
IF: Your advice to young hairdressers starting out?
Concentrate on learning strong basics and techniques. The more techniques you know, the more you can create, the more you have to offer clients.
IF: Thank you Jay, we loved chatting with you.
