IF: Tell us what you think is the biggest challenge in hairdressing today?

Keeping up with all the social media hair! Keeping myself up to date and relevant on Instagram is a lot of work and Pinterest and Instagram are great ways to find inspirations for hair, but sometimes it doesn’t work. Or at least in one sitting.

IF: What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?

The most enjoyable part for me is the people. Over the past 10 years + of doing hair, I have met all sorts of people and learned so much from everyone. Past co-workers, current co-workers, clients, product companies etc. They not taught me much about hair and products but also about human interaction.

IF: Why did you choose the path of hairdressing and was it easy to fall into this work?

Hairdressing came to me by accident. I used to be in retail until one day I realized that was not for me and remembered that I used to color my friend’s hair and that was fun, so off to hair school I went! After that everything kept rolling and going! With that being said, this was the hardest thing for me to fall into. Being super introverted and shy, I struggled a lot to connect with people.

IF: If you had not made the decision to be a hairdresser what would you have been?

HONESTLY? I have no idea. Hahahahaha
Like I said, I was super introverted and super shy……maybe something where I could hide in a corner and keep to myself? Thank goodness I started doing hair.

IF: What is your greatest strength?

My greatest strength is to change up someone’s look. It could be as small as face-framing layers or as big as cutting it all off into a short pixie. CHANGE IS GOOD! It’s hair! You’re supposed to change it up right?

IF: Your favorite hairdressing tools?

Nic Pop 5.25 Scissors and Cesibon Comb (green). I can’t work without these two. I’m attached.

IF: Tell us about your relationship with Iles Formula. How you discovered us and which formula is your favorite?

When I came to Benjamin Salon, I met a stylist named Carla (who has also been featured). Every time I looked at her station, there’s always a big white bottle of the Iles Finishing Serum so I thought why not give it a try.

My relationship with Iles Finishing Serum has been 7 months long and it’s still going strong.

IF: What was the most challenging job you ever made?

The most challenging job for me was moving to Benjamin Salon.

I had been my last location for about 9 years. I only knew that one salon and how that salon ran. It took me a long time to decide to move over. Once I did, I remember thinking, “O M G…” I felt like I didn’t know anything. I didn’t know where everything was or how to conduct myself.

But here I am 7 months later and happy. Change is good. So lucky to be in such an amazing place with amazing people. And if it wasn’t for the move, I wouldn’t have known about Iles!

IF: What was your worst hair moment and why?…. privately or on set/stage or in the salon?

My worst hair moment was when I was still in hair school. It was my second week of school and had no idea what “creative haircutting” meant. Before we started, I signed a waiver. Well…. after 8 hours I ended up a hot pink shelf on one side, long tails in the front, half of the back being shaved off and other half being permed into a triangle. Can’t say that was my favorite haircut….

IF: If you could style anyone’s hair, who would it be and why?

George Clooney! I love cutting men’s hair and he seems like a cool guy AND he makes tequila!

IF: Where do you pull hair inspiration from?

EVERYWHERE. Constantly on Pinterest and Instagram. But my favorite place is from my co-workers. They all do such amazing work and something different from one another.

IF: Your advice to young hairdressers starting out?

One: soak it all in. There isn’t a better time to learn and feed your brain.
Two: be humble
Three: do not be sad when you make a mistake. It is the best way to learn. If you make a mistake, trust me, you will never forget that mistake.

IF: Thank you Yasuna for sharing with us.
