How To Get Esther Canadas’s Vogue Shoot Hair

I’ve had so much love pouring back to me about Esther Canadas’s hair in the recently published Vogue Spain cover shoot! So much so that I decided to share my method with all of you, so you can get that same lustrous feeling at home.

The first thing you should know: Esther has very thick, strong hair. She arrived on set with her hair freshly shampooed and blow-dried straight! I was hoping she would turn up with clean but naturally dried hair, so I had my work cut out for me in recreating a wild natural texture in her hair. I knew if I completely wet her hair it would take hours to dry naturally. So, I decided to use several techniques at once to recreate this organic wave.

Step 1:

I dampened the top areas of the hair where the hair was straightest and liberally applied my Iles Formula Finishing Serum from about 1 inch from roots through to ends.

I knew if  I wet the hair down and allowed it to dry naturally, it would take hours to dry – time we didn’t have on a photo shoot. I also knew the photographer wanted to start with a WOW hair shot with wind(!). Thus, my task was to reproduce her natural hair movement in a way where the wind couldn’t remove the texture.

Step 2:

Next, I wound haphazard sections around 2 fingers in a twist movement toward the back and pinned them in place. Note that these sections were not very exact as I was creating an organic looking texture so I was also looking for little bits that stick out in the finished wave, which you often find in natural curls. I call this poetry within the hairstyle! In some cases, the ends of the sections were left out to maximize this effect.

Using the Dyson Diffuser I started drying the top sections of the hair.

Step 3:

As there was some kind of movement happening underneath the top layers, I sprayed the hair with my Iles Formula Curl Revive and started adding a heated tong to create natural waves. I used a twist and turn motion, which delivers a great natural texture. I dropped and ignored most sections to prevent too much movement until the Curl Revive spray dried.

Both the Iles Formula Finishing Serum and the Iles Formula Curl Revive provide heat protection, UV protection, and humidity protection. These formulas are my best friends on set.

Step 4:

Last, but not least, I dropped the hair down and sprayed a light mist of Iles Formula Curl Revive all over to blend the two techniques together. I only used my hands as my main tool all day. No brush and no comb.
