IF: Tell us what you think is the biggest challenge in hairdressing today?
Context. It seems we’ve forgotten who we do this for. We are servants to the clients who commission our work. It begins and ends there.
IF: What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?
That undefinable feeling when the energy in the studio transforms to a brief concentration of joy and revelation.
IF: Why did you choose the path of hairdressing and was it easy to fall into this work?
Originally my interest in the early 80’s was to get involved in photography, but by pure chance while working in New York I scored a hairdresser’s assistant position and found myself working photo shoots and shows with the very best in the industry at that time. I quickly developed a reputation for my approach to hair cutting, and it wasn’t long before I was scouted by a west coast company that placed me in a position of doing hair on stage with an elite group of style experts. The workload was relentless and I gained invaluable knowledge and insight into a deeper side of the industry which would serve me in ways I could not have imagined in the years to come.
IF: If you had not made the decision to be a hairdresser what would you have been?
IF: What is your greatest strength?
The ability to navigate situations through to maximum benefit.
IF: Your favorite hairdressing tools?
My eye and my intuition.
IF: Tell us about your relationship with Iles Formula. How you discovered us and which formula is your favorite?
Cannot recall how we met… I love the consistency across all the Iles formulas. Refined, effective and luxurious.
IF: What was the most challenging job you ever made?
Opening my first salon in 1999 – Umi Salon.
IF: What was your worst hair moment and why…. privately or on set/stage or in the salon?
Is that a trick question?
IF: If you could style anyone’s hair, who would it be and why?
I would love to have worked on one of Alexander McQueen’s shows.
IF: Where do you pull hair inspiration from?
Films, history, life experience…
IF: Your advice to young hairdressers starting out?
Don’t think of yourself as a “brand” – it’s utter nonsense. Stay true to your vision. Stay loyal to your mentors.
IF: Thank You Jeffrey for sharing.
