IF:  Tell us what you think is the biggest challenge in hairdressing today?

The biggest challenge is technology. I think that hairdressers still can’t see how important it is to be abreast of the way people see your work now.  Magazines used to be the only way people saw your work, digital mediums is now the platform that gets far greater reach and yet so many hairdressers won’t adapt.

IF:  What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?

I love the travel – my work with Zimmermann is extraordinary, shooting in locations from Cuba to the South of France is a real drag…. Also meeting new people in my industry from all over the globe. I was recently in Lisbon mentoring for a Wella event and it was so inspiring to see how enthusiastic the new generation is,  so uplifting!

IF:  Why did you choose the path of hairdressing and was it easy to fall into this work?

I have an older sister who I adore and as I child I just wanted to be her, glamorous and chic, when she would get ready to go out I would watch her do her hair and it just fascinated me – so I thought why not? I have always been very ambitious and tenacious – I have always found a way to make it happen for me. It hasn’t been easy, especially when I started – it was a man’s industry! But I just keep going.

IF:  If you had not made the decision to be a hairdresser what would you have been?

A cartoonist or artists, I loved to draw. Something creative that uses your hands I guess.

IF: What is your greatest strength?

To just get on with it, I learned early on in my career from being on set that you need to know your craft and adapt to all the different personalities. No matter if you like the talent or the art director has it in for you, if you know your craft and produce knock out hair – you’ve done your job.

IF:  Your favorite hairdressing tools?

Dyson Supersonic – it’s been a game changer – finally a heat piece of equipment that takes care of the hair.
Cloud Nine – hair flat iron, no other flat iron gets hair that glass look.
Mizutani Renya X scissors – I loved doing the colaboration  with them, I love all their scissors but am a little bias to my own!

IF:  Tell us about your relationship with Iles Formula. How you discovered us and which formula is your favorite?

I stock and use it in my two salons in Sydney Australia. I have known Wendy for a long time and my manager Gary Saunders told me about it. I love the Serum, beautiful on blow dries and the smell and texture is very luxe, our clients & staff love it.

IF:  What was the most challenging  job you ever had?

I can’t really name just one, each job comes with it’s own challenges, so in that respect I have learned to be adaptable each time I set foot on location. I think it’s more having a “I can do this” mind set. Some crews just have it in for you from the start and I just put my head down and produce knockout hair.

IF:  What was your worst hair moment and why…. privately or on set/stage or in the salon?

Well…. not to name names or anything (maybe you can read between the lines here) I was on my way to do an A List celebrity for an international cover… let’s call her ”Liz” and I needed to sample some new flat irons…. So prior to the shoot “liz” and I had a practice with these new flat irons… and snap… it wasn’t pretty….although I still take care of “Liz” to this very day…

IF:  If you could style anyone’s hair, who would it be and why?

Jennifer Lawrence hands down, she is a risk taker and I love her style, she looks like fun and I think she would get the Aussie sense of humor too!

IF:  Where do you pull hair inspiration?

Everywhere and everything! I am fortunate enough to travel the world in my career and be exposed to some pretty cool experiences and incredible places. I work with so many inspiring creatives from all different industries, and I take a little bit here and a little bit from there and spin it to create my own.

IF:  Your advice to young hairdressers starting out?

Be hungry for your craft, love what it is you can create with your own two hands; your skill is yours alone. Work hard, watch and listen, listen and watch. Be humble and eager to learn something new everyday – you never stop learning in this craft and that in it self is a blessing. Find your inspiration and grab muse and create.
