Iles Formula Hair Talk guest this week is Sophia Heffer, part owner alongside Kenna of Kennaland London.
Not only is Sophia one of our favorite colorists but her salon is also an Iles Formula Ambassador. Read Sophia’s thoughts on hairdressing today and the challenges associated with social media and communication, as well as what it is that inspires her work the most.
IF : Tell us what you think is the biggest challenge in a hairdressing career today?
SH : Content – you have to do everything, it’s not just about being a really good hairdresser now. You have to keep up social media, new technologies, new techniques and keep your clients engaged. There’s so much involved in the job that’s not just about your skill set… It’s how you promote yourself and keep yourself inspired.
IF : What’s the most enjoyable part of your current job?
SH : Making people happy! I like seeing clients fall in love with the end result of my work and see their confidence grow.
IF : Why did you choose the path of hairdressing?
SH : I love talking to people and meeting people from different walks of life. The creative element of incorporating fashion and music in my work is really interesting and exciting.
IF : If you had not made the decision to be a hairdresser, what would you have been?
SH : An interior designer.
IF : What is your greatest strength?
SH : Communication, listening and advising… And not just on hair.
IF : Your favorite hairdressing tools?
SH : Hairdryer!
IF : Tell us about your relationship with Iles Formula. How you discovered us and which formula is your favorite?
SH : I have worked with Wendy over the years on various shoots and campaigns. I was so inspired that she only used her one product (at the time she made at home!) and loved that she never needed to use hairspray. My favorite formula is the Finishing Serum as it is so versatile, works in all hair types and it is the backbone product in our studio.
IF : New Hair Trends ; Is there something happening with hair right now that is exciting you?
SH : I love how condition is playing a huge part in the industry right now. People are aware of protecting and maintaining their hair condition. From a colorist point, this is great as there’s nothing better than healthy hair!
IF : What was your worst hair moment and why… privately or on set or in the salon?
SH : When I had a pillar box red mullet… It was my greatest look!
IF : If you could cut and colour anyone’s hair, who would it be and why?
SH : FKA Twigs – I love her style.
IF : Where do you pull hair inspiration from?
SH : Everywhere. So many things inspire me: nature, fashion, food and art to name a few.
IF : Your advice to young hairdressers starting out?
SH : Research is key to the industry. Always be looking for new products and new technologies, understanding hair texture and asking the right questions. As clients are so informed and things can be looked up so easily, you need to be the provider of the right knowledge to your client. Keep up with fashion and celebrities!
