Iles Formula Hair Talk With Craig Walker
We met Craig this year while doing our Iles Formula hair launch at Edwards and Co in Sydney. Craig came on board to help present Iles Formula to the locks of VIP press in Australia.
IF : Craig, tell us a little about yourself ?
CW : Working in this Industry since I was 14; 12 years on I still love it as I did being a Saturday Junior back home in Scotland. During those years it has taken me around the world to my new home as an emerging artist here at Edwards and Co, Sydney. During my time here in Australia, I have gained experiences in so many aspects of our industry from editorial, television, fashion and being awarded multiple awards from around Australia. I believe that in today’s industry to be a fully rounded hair artist from the salon to the session world only strengthens you as a creative. In saying that I have a real passion when it comes to styling and would love to pursue this avenue further and see where I can take it with Edwards and Co.
IF : Tell us what you think is the biggest challenge in a hairdressing career today ?
CW : Social media plays a huge role in salon culture today. However, it can often cause client expectations to be unrealistic. During color consultations I often have to inform my clients that in order to achieve their desired result it may take a few attempts. Lightening hair is usually a process and requires patience if you don’t want to compromise the condition and integrity of the hair.
IF : What’s the most enjoyable part of your current job ?
CW : Throughout my life I have always loved Art and I believe that working with hair is a true extension of that. I love to create, using hair as my canvas. Trying to please my clients wants and needs whilst also expressing my creativity and ideas is my goal every time somebody sits in my chair.
IF : Why did you choose the path of hairdressing ?
CW : It started for me back home in Glasgow, Scotland where I had my first job at a great Salon called Rita Rusk when I was just 14 years old. I was the Saturday junior and my responsibilities didn’t stretch further than a shampoo at the basin but I loved it! Not long after that my Dad bought me my first pair of Scissors and that was it, I knew I really wanted to become a hairdresser !
IF : What is your greatest strength ?
CW : I believe my strength is creating beautiful effortless hair with regards to color placement or when it comes to styling. When I work with hair I try and not make it look like it’s just left the salon, at times I believe less if definitely more. Gone are the days of sprayed down hair you’d be scared to light a match next too!
IF : Tell us about your relationship with Iles Formula. How you discovered us and which formula is your favorite ?
CW : I’ve known of Wendy’s work for years but recently I was given the opportunity to work with her on the Australian leg of her trip, in our Sydney salon, Edwards and Co. Since learning about the products unique ingredients and how its makes the hair feel, it’s now the only product I’m using in all my clients. I love the effect that all 3 of the formulas give you but if I had to choose, I’d have to say the finishing serum is hands down a winner for me ! It makes the hair feel incredible and produces this weightless shine that I’ve never seen from any other serum.
IF : New Hair trends, is there something happening with hair right now that is exciting you ?
CW : The center part has made a comeback which I’m loving at the moment, teamed with soft 80’s Parisian texture with a grown out fringe, the little bit of Iles Formula Finishing Serum added giving the look a more textured feel while still appearing soft in the blow-out.
