Iles Formula Hair Talk welcomes Hannah Whitney of Ty Alexander Salon in Newport Beach in California! Let’s read what Hannah has to say about the hair industry today….
IF: Tell us what you think is the biggest challenge in hairdressing today?
The competition, there is a salon on every corner. You need to be confident in your craft and stand out.
IF: What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?
Being around people and making people feel good. Nothing like a happy client.
IF: Why did you choose the path of hairdressing and was it easy to fall into this work?
I was unsure of what I wanted to do out of High school, I joined the Golden West College cosmetology program and here I am 8 years later. I’m really lucky to say that I love what I do.
IF: If you had not made the decision to be a hairdresser what would you have been?
I can’t imagine doing anything else.
IF: What is your greatest strength?
My people skills, it’s very important in this industry.
IF: Your favourite hairdressing tools?
Blow dryer and some round brushes.
IF: Tell us about your relationship with Iles Formula. How you discovered us and which formula is your favourite?
Wendy and Ali came into our salon to educate us on her products. I helped them with the demo and fell in love.
IF: What was the most challenging job you ever had?
Assisting for sure. The salon that I worked for at the time moved their assistant’s around every six months. I learned from so many great stylists but I had to also learn how to work with a lot of different personalities.
IF: What was your worst hair moment and why…. privately or on set/stage or in the salon?
I recently had a client that had unrealistic expectations for a color service, trying to explain this to a 70-year-old woman is tricky, she insisted that I do what she asked. That was the biggest mistake I’ve ever made. It quickly became my fault that it didn’t turn out like the picture she showed me of herself 30 years ago. This was the first client I’ve ever fired. I don’t want anyone to ever leave my chair unhappy but in this case, there was nothing I could do or say.
IF: If you could style anyone’s hair, who would it be and why?
Britney Spears, she needs some TLC.
IF: Where do you pull hair inspiration from?
IF: Your advice to young hairdressers starting out?
Tough skin and Good luck.
