This week, Iles Formula is delighted to welcome Paul Edmonds.

Paul is the Founder and Artistic Director of the multi-award-winning Paul Edmonds salons in London; a Georgian townhouse-inspired luxury hair + beauty emporium in the heart of Knightsbridge and more recently, an art deco designed oasis at the iconic Battersea Power Station. As the official Hair Partner of BAFTA (British Academy Film and Television Awards), Paul has become renowned over his 30-year career for the unique and holistic approach he takes to hair and beauty, blending technical excellence with intuition and artistry. He combines an impeccable English sophistication with a fashion-forward urban chic, counting world-leading actors, musicians, fashion designers, directors, and editors amongst his most loyal clientele.

1. What would you term as your specialty within your trade?

I would say cutting and styling to work with the individual’s bone structure and hair type to enhance and bring out their individual look, which I love.

2. What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?

That’s simple. Making someone happy and see how that person you’ve worked on looks and gains confidence within themselves.

3. Why did you choose the path of hairdressing and was it easy to fall into this work?

I kind of fell into it as a job until I was going to go to college.

4. If you had not made the decision to be a hairdresser what would you have been?

I think I would have worked in design which is what I was going to study at college before I fell in love with hairdressing.

5. What is your greatest strength?

Patience and listening.

6. Your favorite hairdressing tools?

My Starflight comb and Japanese Passion scissors.

7. Tell us about your relationship with Iles Formula. How you discovered us and which formula is your favorite?

I am always looking for products that fulfill the needs of our clientele and I was introduced to it at a perfect time by a friend. I loved that it looks stylish modern and has clean lines (for shelf appeal) but more importantly, it delivers on the high quality of natural ingredients that actually work.

8. What was the most challenging job you ever made?

It’s always hard making hair look either an unsuitable style, unkempt, or even badly cut on someone. I did all the lead actors for a series that was supposed to take place over a twenty-four-hour period but was filmed over six months. Their hair had to be kept looking exactly the same as it was filmed completely out of sequence. And some had to look like they needed a haircut.

9. What was your worst hair moment and why… privately or on set/stage or in the salon?

I think the worst moment for any hairdresser is the same. It’s when the person you are doing says they don’t like what you’ve done. It doesn’t happen very often and it may only need a little tweak to make it right but those moments are like a dagger going through your heart as you want everyone to love what you’ve done for them.

10. If you could style anyone’s hair, who would it be and why?

Scarlett Johansson as she’s always brave with her hair and likes having fun with it.

11. Where do you pull hair inspiration from?

Hair inspiration comes from the ether; it can be an old photo, art exhibition, or TV. It’s from everywhere and collated in my head.

12. Your advice to young hairdressers starting out?

Get the best basic training you can find and keep asking why does that work and what is good and what is bad. Learn taste by absorbing as much as you can from fashion, art, history and keep challenging yourself to be better.

13. Apart from the drastic salon hygienic regulations, what changes to a salon’s everyday business do you think will stay after the Covid-19 disruption?

As a salon, we have changed our business model incredibly. We now have a remote reception team answering the phone calls. Our reception desk has gone, we have our front-of-house team coming to the client for payment and rebooking with the opening on a tablet, hours are extended, virtual consultations are commonplace. However, the clients’ experience is still central to what we do as a business and at present, there is no robotic version of us yet!
