IF: Tell us what you think is the biggest challenge in hairdressing today?
Definitely inspiring the next generation to enter the industry. With numbers at an all-time low, unless we can inspire the youth to look at hairdressing as a brilliant career path our industry will stagnate.
IF: What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?
Meeting students and seeing their excitement about learning. I have the best job – sharing my knowledge, nurturing and encouraging them to believe in their abilities.
IF: Why did you choose the path of hairdressing and was it easy to fall into this work?
There was never a doubt in my mind as a small child that I was destined to be a hairdresser. I was obsessed with everything about hair. I can’t say it was easy to get an apprenticeship in my small country town, but I was determined and eventually I landed a job and the rest is history.
IF: If you had not made the decision to be a hairdresser what would you have been?
I’d say floristry. I completed 12 months at college studying floristry which I say was the turning point as a hairdresser. I developed a better understanding of shape balance and design, all thanks to this class.
IF: What is your greatest strength?
Dressing hair, drive, and determination. But I also think my ability to encourage and grow confidence in my students.
IF: Your favorite hairdressing tools?
GHD styling tongs and dryer.
IF: Tell us about your relationship with Iles Formula. How you discovered us and which formula is your favorite?
I had the privilege to do a podcast with Wendy earlier in the year. She spoke about her products and it twigged a desire to try and see what all the buzz was about.
Since using it, I’m in love! My hair has never looked better. The comment from my colleagues about how great my hair looked was incredible.
IF: What was the most challenging job you ever made?
Working with Goldwell on their international campaigns. The pressure and demands from the marketing, PR and the team were tough. Trying to interpret their vision was the most challenging aspect of the job.
IF: What was your worst hair moment and why….privately or on set/stage or in the salon?
I still remember a beautiful model I was doing on a shoot. I had to tong set her hair and was touching up a few curls that had dropped. I’d left the tongs on all morning by mistake and when I curled the ends of her hair, I burnt her ends off – I nearly died. Thank goodness she had a lot of hair.
IF: If you could style anyone’s hair, who would it be and why?
Lady Gaga. She is fierce and not afraid to experiment.
IF: Where do you pull hair inspiration from?
I look to the fashion houses for inspiration. Especially the couture shows. I love to pare back aspects of some of the detail and looks making these ideas more approachable and relatable. But, I do sketch a lot and allow my mind to dream ideas that generally evolve into my Avant-garden concepts.
IF: Your advice to young hairdressers starting out?
Take your time to learn; be a sponge. Have an open and enquiring mind. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Learn the rules. Perfect your skills and develop a strong technical approach to everything you do. Remember to always have fun.
