Iles Formula Hair Talk this week goes to Denmark to welcome Metta Albertson and Pernille Pedersen co-founders of Vaerk Salon in Copenhagen. Take a read on their views on hairdressing today and be sure to check out their Instagram for more about their salon.
IF: Tell us what you think is the biggest challenge in hairdressing today?
VS: The challenge is that it is not just about hair, it is also about being good at communicating, having a lot of people around you every day, keeping up with fashion, and being active to promote yourself on social media.
IF: What is the most enjoyable part of your job?
VS: What we like most about our job is all the great people and personalities we meet every day. We live and breathe for creating nice and flattering hair. Also, to be able to be creative through haircuts and hair art.
IF: Why did you choose the path of hairdressing and was it easy to fall into this work?
VS: We chose to be hairdressers, because we could not, not be hairdressers. We use all of our creativity and craftsmanship every day and we enjoy working with people.
IF: If you had not made the decision to be a hairdresser what would you have been?
VS: If we were not hairdressers, we would definitely have become something else within the creative world, such as a jeweler, florist or perhaps make up artists.
IF: What is your greatest strength?
VS: Our strengths are to recognize each individuals style and personality when we meet them in the salon, and create exactly what they wish, or aspire to be.
IF: Your favorite hairdressing tools?
VS: It has to be our scissors, we use them every day, and they are very personal to us.
IF: Tell us about your relationship with Iles Formula. How you discovered us and which formula is your favorite?
VS: In Vaerk we have been to several of Wendy Iles masterclasses and it has been a great learning experience and inspiration every time. Our favorite is the Finishing Serum, we use it on all of our customers, and everyone is enchanted by its smell and the great difference and softness it gives. We love it!
IF: What was your worst hair moment and why? Privately or on set/stage or in the salon?
VS: The most challenging thing about the job happens every day, where you have to show the best side of yourself and give every costumer the best service and haircut. And every time there is a show, just before the models begin the catwalk, it can be hectic backstage, and it is challenging every time. However, that is also what makes our job so great, and that it succeeds every time.
IF: Where do you pull hair inspiration from?
VS: Inspiration comes from a lot of places, both from nature, on the streets, traveling to other countries, and other cultures. We also use Pinterest a lot.
IF: What do you love most about doing hair?
VS: There are a lot of people both on TV and on the streets, whom I think could have a great makeover, of course it is always fun to do hair on famous people and before a great show. However, we would treat everyone equal in the salon, in the end we are all just people.
IF: What advice would you give to a young hairdresser starting out?
VS: Ask many questions and have as many models as possible during your internship, make mistakes because you will learn from it. Be true to yourself, your gut feeling is always right, about clients and which road you want to follow and who you want to work with.
