IF: What is the most inspiring thing you’ve learned at your job?
GC: Being exposed to an array of environments and people through my work, I see the incredible beauty of Mother Nature and the goodness of the human spirit every day. My photographic projects, commercial and otherwise, explore a sort of unique depth that life offers us, I use my practice to celebrate and reflect this.
IF: Your favourite destination?
GC: It is a toss up. I love Tulum, Mexico for its Turtle hatchings and I am drawn to the Australian outback town of Alice Springs. I was lucky enough to spend a lot of my childhood exploring the remote wonders of the Northern Territory. I still get a unique feeling when I return to the dusty red earth, I feel proud, and my body and mind feel at ease. Perhaps it was being a kid in the desert that fostered so many of my freedoms through an understanding of the human spirit.
IF: Best fashion inspiration decade?
GC: I grew up in a 1970’s Australian home and it was in this house that I came to fall in love with the era in every way.. The colours/design, the shagginess, the attitude… I love my bell bottom pants with a mustard corduroy jacket….
IF: If you were to treat yourself what would it be?
GC: I would take an entire Sunday off, and go to Tathra, NSW to relax. I am drawn to its wild coast line, abundance of Australian bush, and limited phone service. I would practice yoga in the morning sunshine, make my self a strong flat white and then listen to David Bowie records all afternoon.
That is my heaven!
IF: Your ultimate dinner party guests ?
GC: Elvis Presley, Paul Keating, Carole King, Maya Angelou, Frida Kahlo and David Bowie… (Although the real ultimate dinner party would be David Bowie and myself…)
IF: Relationship with your hair?
GC: My Mum trained as a hairdresser in the 1970s, so I have always had an appreciation for a good head of hair. The Shag hair do she gave me in primary school was the first statement I had ever made with my hair.
Now days, the Australian sun is harsh and I spend quite a lot of time in the ocean, so I often feel like I owe my locks some love… Until I began using Iles Formula I did not look after my hair at all. I now adore my hair care rituals using the Iles products daily; without a doubt No2 has completely transformed and healed my hair. I have learn’t through Wendy what an asset your hair can become when treated with a little love.
IF: How did you hear about Iles Formula?
GC: I first learnt of Iles Formula when I met the divine Beatrice Masi at Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat in Queensland, Australia. The gentle Iles scent and its distinctive silky texture changed my approach to hair. As I washed my hair I was no longer going through the motions, I began to relish in the delight of caring for my hair.
IF: Do you read direction for use?
GC: Not usually, but I did find myself in the shower re-reading the Iles No.2 as it reads so beautifully. Sometimes I like a little reminder to slow down and use the Iles comb when applying No2.
IF: Do you read the composition of a product?
GC: I always check the composition of products I use on my skin and hair, as I am quite sensitive to certain botanicals. I don’t react to any of the Iles Formula range, it is a truly wonderful product. I love the thought of applying silk with the scent of white flowers to my hair.
IF: Your favourite Iles Formula product?
GC: Iles Formula Serum, I am a dependent on it… (I honestly went into mourning when I heard there was a global shortage of the Serum earlier in the year… Luckily my sister was well stocked.)
IF: Your favourite shower dance?
GC: Boogieing to Carole King’s ‘I Feel The Earth Move’
IF: What makes you the most happy?
GC: When I am outside with my camera and when I spend a day preparing and eating beautiful food with the people I love. It is a privilege to then go into my darkroom and create enlargements from shots taken that day knowing they will fill the homes of my most dearest family and friends, brings me great joy.
The thought that one day, one of my photographs may help a child discover a glimpse of their ancestors spark…that makes me incredibly happy.
IF: If you were to share one beauty tip with us today, what would it be?
GC: Show yourself love – Create rituals, be kind to your skin and hair, above all honour what your body is telling you.
IF: What is being a woman in 2017?
GC: For me it is wonderful. I have many small pleasures throughout my day and I love what I do. However, it is as important as ever to continue to fight the good fight, for our comrades and Mother Nature.
