IF: Tell us what you think is the biggest challenge in hairdressing today

I think that nowadays there are many challenges in the hair design industry, and I will try to list several. First, there are excellent hair designers in the industry, as well as new colors on the market and new styles that requires a hair designer to be fully aware of the latest fashion, science and knowledge in order to be up to date with all the advancements available today. The client of course, is also much more sophisticated and looking forward to being treated with the best. Second, the world of social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc., has completely changed the world of marketing and accessibility and is very challenging and intriguing.  It provides a very powerful tool for businesses to promote themselves and always stay up front.  In addition, the competition is constant, much greater and never stops for a second. I have no doubt that this is the biggest challenge hair designers are facing today.

IF: What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?

I love every part and aspect of my job. I live it, breath it, and generally just love working with people. I enjoy mostly the part when I am done working on a client and I get to see the happiness in their faces, the big smile from ear to ear and the huge hug of gratitude I get from my clients. That's the biggest satisfaction for me.

IF : Why did you choose the path of hairdressing and was it easy to fall into this work?

As I remember myself, from a very young age, I have dealt with art. I would go with my mother to different hair salons and spend hours there.  I remember being a young kid who would get excited to see the final results.  It always got me curious and so I always knew I would one day become a hair designer. It was also obvious to everyone around me. I started working at a very successful hair salon in Tel Aviv, Israel and two years later I opened my own salon, which proved to be a very successful move. It became an IT salon and did very well. Usually in life a person chooses his profession, in my case I feel that the profession chose me.

IF: If you had not made the decision to be a hairdresser what would you have been?

If I didn’t become a hair stylist, I am sure I would become a fashion designer creating my own line of clothing. I have no doubt about it.

IF: What is your greatest strength?

My greatest strength, is my imagination and the ability to translate some images to be completed by my hands. The use of my hands, as well as the constant desire to learn something new, excel and evolve.

IF: Your favorite hairdressing tools?

My favorite item to use are scissors, actual hair cutting and creating interesting hair lines and designs is my greatest passion.

IF: Tell us about your relationship with Iles Formula. How you discovered us and which formula is your favorite?

I use your  Iles Formula on all of my customers.  As a hair designer I worked with and used many products, your serum is by far one of my favorites. It gives the hair a glamorous texture and it fits all hair types. I work at Brighton Salon in Beverly Hills and I was introduced to Iles Formula products when the Iles representative Ali came to talk to us about them. I instantly fell in love with the products and have been using them on every client I have. I am so happy to see how much they love and enjoy the quality and feel of the products.

IF: What was the most challenging job you ever made?

I had many challenging moments in my profession. I was involved with Fashion Weeks, TV shows and commercials, Models and also brides.  However, without a doubt the hardest and most challenging thing for me was to close my business in Tel Aviv, Israel, almost two years ago, and move to Hollywood, which represents a  bigger and more challenging world.

IF: What was your worst hair moment and why…. privately or on set/stage or in the salon?

Thank God, I never had such a moment.  I am someone who is always planning before I start working on a client.  I always think through how to prepare for a job. I strive to do my best to keep my clients happy, as well as keeping a clean and honest reputation.

IF: If you could style anyone’s hair, who would it be and why?

Scarlet Johansson would be my number one choice for hair, and since I am also a makeup artist, I admire her beautiful and perfect face for makeup. I believe that it's better to do "Total Look" - hair design and makeup together, she is so pretty.

IF: Where do you pull hair inspiration from?

Big fashion shows and venues around the world.

IF: Your advice to young hairdressers starting out?

"Never stop dreaming, because dreams can come true"

Put your ego aside, stick to a good and successful mentor, try to learn from everything and everyone, so you can grow from it.  This is the best school there is.  Keep doing what you like and don't let anyone tell you that you're not good enough, or that you are not able.  Listen to yourself,  be creative - there you will find your happiness.

IF: Thank you Shlomi for sharing yourself with us.
