Iles Formula Hair Talk Featuring SaraJane Lynch

This week we introduce stylist Sarajane Lynch, one of the exquisite stylists and educators on the floor at NYC Whittemore House Salon.  Trained the Sassoon way, with a past history of educating on the floor with Micheal Gordon in his world renowned salon Bumble and Bumble, SaraJanes holistic approach to hairdressing has won her even the approval stamp of French Vogue !

Let's read what Sara has to say about hairdressing today.

IF:   Tell us what you think is the biggest challenge in hairdressing today?

Keeping up, staying fresh and current and not falling into a rut. I love the challenge though; it keeps me from getting bored.

IF:  What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?

Sharing my knowledge with younger stylists. And I love helping people feeling good about themselves by creating styles and looks that boost their confidence. It is amazing to watch the difference in people’s attitudes from the moment they first sit in my chair to when they leave the salon.

IF:  Why did you choose the path of hairdressing and was it easy to fall into this work?

I was a hair model for my hairstylist when I was 18/19, and thrived on being in the salon and around creative people. I knew I didn’t want to sit at a desk or behind a computer all day, so I decided to go to beauty school.

IF:  If you had not made the decision to be a hairdresser what would you have been?

Most likely an interior designer - It’s creative and involves helping others, which are two things that are important to me.

IF:  What is your greatest strength?

Going with what I feel, being able to trust and follow my intuition.

IF:  Your favorite hairdressing tools?

My comb and mirror

IF:  Tell us  about your relationship with Iles Formula. How you discovered us and which formula is your favorite?

This is interesting because I was so resistant, I tried it many times and I didn’t understand how the #3 (Finishing Serum) worked. But I was persistent and kept using it on everyone and every texture.  #3 has become my favorite product now, it’s very versatile, has so much hold and is completely weightless, totally magical.

IF:  What was the most challenging  job you ever had?

The most challenging job I ever had was working in an accounting office. Learning I was not good with numbers made me realize my creativity and ability to work well with my hands was the way to go.

IF:  What was your worst hair moment and why….privately or on set/stage or in the salon?

My worst hair moment was back in 2000.  A woman in her mid 40’s came to the salon and requested that I fix her color after she had slept with bleach and 40vol in her hair overnight!  Almost all of her hair had broken off to an inch long all over except the 6” mullet she had in the back that she had tied up in a ponytail. I fixed her color, but convincing her she needed a haircut was extremely challenging.

IF:  If you could style anyones hair, who would it be and why?

Debbie Harry.  She is an icon and it would be so fun and inspiring to hear her stories.

IF:  Where do you pull  hair inspiration from?

The street mostly, NYC is the BEST!

IF:  Your advice to young hairdressers starting out?

Master the basics, stay educated and never think you know it all.

IF:  Thank you SaraJane for sharing your salon experiences with us.
