IF: Tell us what you think is the biggest challenge in hairdressing today?

Staying current and knowing how to evolve one’s craft. It’s important that salons offer advanced education to new hairdressers so that from the beginning we are learning how to learn rather than just memorizing techniques.

IF: What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?

The control and instant gratification! I’m always blown away by the power of great hair and how good it can make one feel. It’s also great that after only a couple hours of work I get to see the results of my efforts.

IF: Why did you choose the path of hairdressing and was it easy to fall into this work?

As early as I can remember, I was so enamored with the salon culture every time my parents would take me to get my haircut . As a kid I was always harassing my Mom to let me play with her hair. I think my path as a hairdresser chose me. Although it was easy to “fall” into this work, pushing myself to do the best work I am capable of is a daily commitment.

IF: If you had not made the decision to be a hairdresser what would you have been?

A lawyer because I respect how the law is meant to protect us from chaos and I love to argue.

IF: What is your greatest strength?

Tenacity, I don’t give up until I feel I’ve reached my best possible result. It makes me feel like I’m always growing and moving forward.

IF: Your favourite hairdressing tools?

Beth Minardi creative foils for the control they offer when working with longer hair and Redken color bottles because of their accuracy and efficiency in applying color.

IF: Tell us about your relationship with Iles Formula. How you discovered us and which formula is your favourite?

I was introduced to Iles Formula through one of the two salons I worked at and since day one after Wendy’s master class, I have been utterly impressed with the performance of this product. After 20 years behind the chair, this is my favorite product to date. I believe in the power of using the whole range, but if you need repair, smoothness, volume, hold and protection for all hair types in one product then Finishing Serum is easily a favorite!

IF: What was the most challenging job you ever made?

The most challenging job I’ve ever had was working for an auto broker before I enrolled in cosmetology school. I could never remember how to properly write up all the contracts and I just had no idea what I was doing with all that paperwork.

IF: What was your worst hair moment and why…. privately or on set/stage or in the salon?

My worst hair moment was when I got hair extensions on myself. Interview with the Vampire had just come out when I was 18 and I wanted to look like Tom Cruise as Le Stat. But I ended up looking like Bon Jovi circa Livin’ on a Prayer; it lasted a month.

IF: If you could style anyone’s hair, who would it be and why?

Marilyn Monroe because she was not afraid of her own glamour.

IF: Where do you pull hair inspiration from?

I’m a visual learner so watching other hairdressers really inspires me. There’s so much to learn by just observing others and I love the access we now have with all the hair tutorials on YouTube.

IF: Your advice to young hairdressers starting out?

Remember that you have to invest in your own career. Listen to those who have done it first and then decide for yourself. Don’t sacrifice your education by rushing to get on the floor. Commit to nurturing your craft every day.
