IF:  Tell us what you think is the biggest challenge in hairdressing today?

Definitely social media. It has helped to create many illusions for clients as to what is achievable on their hair; from black to blonde transformations, to falsely advertised images that have been edited, to all the celebrities who have someone do their hair for them everyday with wigs or extensions and appear perfect at all times.

IF:  What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?

I think being able to use my skills in many different situations such as; the salon, photo shoots, television and runway events. It gives my creativity a lot more flexibility and I'm able to take on many different opportunities rather than working in the same environment, doing the same thing everyday.

IF:  Why did you choose the path of hairdressing and was it easy to fall into this work?

After studying makeup and special effects for a year, I had dabbled in hair during the course and decided I wanted to do an apprenticeship to pursue a career as a hair and makeup artist.

After getting a great opportunity to work on a huge movie production, assisting-  I connected with hairdressers whilst on set and fast forward another year- I had landed myself in one of the best salons in Australia!

Looking back now, I’ve always loved hair- teaching myself how to braid and style hair from the age of 8.

IF:  If you had not made the decision to be a hairdresser what would you have been?

I've always loved being creative and making things with my hands. I think no matter where I ended up- it always had to be something that engaged my mind and allowed me to express myself.

Perhaps a special effects makeup artist or something to do with baking or cooking.

IF:  What is your greatest strength?

I think Ive always worked well along side of others, especially as a first assistant on set to hair directors. I was taught everything I know from the best over the years and now I love passing that knowledge onto my younger peers.

IF:  Your favorite hairdressing tools?

My absolute must have is a Mason-Pearson brush for session work. But I love anything YS Park and have a serious problem hoarding all their products. I have nearly everything of theirs!

IF:  Tell us  about your relationship with Iles Formula. How you discovered us and which formula is your favorite?

I first encountered Iles Formula when Wendy Iles presented the product at our salon and did a demo- enticing me to buy a gift box to try on my own hair at home.

It quickly became the love of my life and I truly believed in the product, its ingredients and the results. A few years on, and I still use the Serum on EVERYONE  (and I mean it!) that sits in my chair and I can swear to you that nothing I have ever used, ever, has had the same results. I love to use the Serum on both wet and dry hair. But blow-dried in, is when I really see my clients eyes light up with the silky shine and feel.

IF:  What was the most challenging job you ever had?

I think some of the most challenging yet rewarding work I have ever done has been during fashion week. To be able to execute something to look so effortless with such precision in a cramped space with a bunch of other people around you certainly isn't for every hairdresser- but I get such a buzz once the models are down the runway!

IF:  What was your worst hair moment and why….privately or on set/stage or in the salon?

In salon would have to be a few years ago (which still makes me cringe) was when I was applying a gloss on a client at the basin and didn’t double check the bottle I used and applied 3V to the hair instead of 9V on a blonde. The hair turned pink instantly. Not fun.

On set would be in my early assisting days when I left a whole big container of the session stylists hair extensions behind at a gig. Easily $10,000 worth. Luckily the wardrobe crew were able to get it for me and return it to us!

IF:  If you could style anyones hair, who would it be and why?

Bridget Bardot! She had this incredible head of hair back in the 60s that always looked so effortless yet glamorous and I feel so inspired when looking back on images of her!

IF:  Where do you pull  hair inspiration from?

I think Instagram and Pinterest; being so accessible for inspiration for both hair colour, styles and tutorials. But I also love looking at hair competition entries and their collections- it is so fascinating to see what you can do with hair when you think outside of the box and are given a brief or a theme to work with.

IF:  Your advice to young hairdressers starting out?

Pass it forward- help as many people as you can to the best of your ability (and a smile!), because one day it will be you needing that help and you would want someone reliable and driven to be there passing the pin, or rinsing your colour for you.

IF:  Thank you Lauren for sharing with our Hair Talk your experiences as a hairdresser.  We love your work!
