The Show

First, lets talk about the show and where it took place.  Alexander Wang's show for New York Fashion Week took place in the up and coming Harlem neighborhood. Celebrities definitely came out to see what was in store.  What they witnessed was a standing room only show, that was a party in and of itself.  Party girl 90's punk was the vibe, and all of the models were dressed head to toe in all black.  Thus, Guido Palau's inspiration was developed.

FAQs

Was the bowl cut ever in style?

In the 1960s, the mop-top became popular due to The Beatles. However, in the 1970s, the bowl haircut was created by Vidal Sassoon. Over the years, the bowl cut has come and gone, but the versatility and uniqueness of the cut certainly draws attention no matter the period.

Who brought back the bowl cut?

Hairstylist Guido Palau set the scene for the new trend of the bowl cut, and over the years, it has come and gone. It can now be seen as an avant-garde haircut, with the ability to be manipulated and restyled. It is no longer seen as a limiting hairstyle thanks to the varied tools, products, and techniques we now have.

Why is the bowl cut popular?

According to Palau it has become so popular because people like changing it, and it's a continuing evolution." He says, "People like it to be...an imitation of becoming like [the stars]." There's not much to the bowl cut. It's the look after your parents place a bowl on your head as a kid and trim the hair around the edges.

However, hairstylists are constantly reworking our framework of what is ‘in’ style. Today we see the bowl cut as a representation of pushing the limit to craft a unique style that transcends tradition.

How old is the bowl cut?

The origins of the bowl cut extend far beyond Moe Howard. The style was common among European men in the 12th through 15th centuries as well as Russian serfs in the 18th century.

The appeal was simple: it was a style that could be achieved with no skill, no brushing, and at virtually no cost. We can take a lesson from the past to see how hairstylists today are constantly reinventing the norm.

Why is it called a bowl cut?

Bowl cuts are so named because they give the appearance of an upside-down bowl on the head and are often created by placing a bowl on the head and cutting around it. This distinctive bowl shape distinguishes the bowl cut from other short haircuts.

Bottom line, there’s no mistaking a bowl cut for another short haircut!

How do I choose the right length and style for my bowl cut?

Consider your face shape and hair texture to choose the right length and style for a bowl cut. For example, a shorter bowl cut with longer layers on top can add height to a round face, while a longer, more layered bowl cut can soften a square face. It's also important to consider your personal preferences and styling abilities.
