IF: Tell us what you think is the biggest challenge in hairdressing today?
The hair industry is changing dramatically… The internet gives us as artists, the opportunity to present our work to a worldwide audience. We are not dependent on big brands anymore. Today, clients are well educated and come with lots of knowledge, that´s something I love very much. But sometimes, social media can give clients unrealistic expectations and a negative self-image. That is the flip side of the coin. It takes both time and finesse to help them rediscover their own unique beauty.
IF: What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?
I love every part of hairdressing. It´s not a job, it´s my lifestyle. The most precious reward is when I see I made a difference in the way the client perceives herself/himself. That´s the magic moment.
IF: Why did you choose the path of hairdressing and was it easy to fall into this line of work?
My ancestors were hairdressers for generations, it’s been in the family for a long time. I always felt like the black sheep and wanted to become something completely different: a painter, a Rockstar, a soccer player. I did not really grow up with the vision that doing hair could be creative and artistic. When I finally decided to step into the hair business, I promised myself to do it my own way, to question everything, and put it on a whole new level.
IF: If you had not made the decision to be a hairdresser what would you have been?
I think I am quite a skilled interior designer. As you can see in my salon, I love this too.
IF: What is your greatest strength?
My sensibility. I want to understand the person and their own personal style to find the right look for them. I don´t need much time and many words to spot a person’s nature and how to bring their beauty to the surface. Sometimes, these are just some minor changes with a huge impact, like flipping a parting to the other side or a mild nuance in colour. And sometimes, it´s a dramatic makeover.
IF: Your favourite hairdressing tools?
My scissors are part of me. This is why I have a pair of scissors tattooed in the palm of my hand.
IF: Tell us about your relationship with Iles Formula. How did you discover us and which formula is your favourite?
I first met Wendy (Iles Formula Founder) at a Dyson hair event in Munich, Germany. She was attending although she didn´t understand a word (because it was held in German). Later, we were the two guests in a panel discussion on stage and she said she understood everything because hair passion is a universal language.
I love the Finishing Serum most, it’s so beautiful on blow dries.
IF: What was the most challenging job you ever had?
I worked on several TV shows for German Television. This was always a great experience. The challenge came afterwards: some clients expected life-changing hairstyles by just getting their ends trimmed. TV never shows the painful 12+ hours of work you put in a hair rescue operation but just the glorious result.
IF: What was your worst hair moment and why…privately or on set/stage or in the salon?
I don’t think there was that one, special, big moment that deserves the title “worst”. Everything in life requires some sort of risk. I see unexpected situations as a non-dramatic challenge that can be used to improve yourself.
IF: If you could style anyone’s hair, who would it be and why?
Well, if I could really be totally free in my choice, I think I would use a time machine and do Adam & Eve. It might be a great experience for all of us involved: two adults, getting their first haircuts ever and one hairdresser creating looks that all woman and men on earth are sporting.
IF: Where do you pull hair inspiration from?
Inspiration comes from everywhere. Every moment and every interaction can trigger an ingenious idea. People, friends, nature, architecture and especially art, build the mixture that supports and challenges my creative work.
IF: Your advice to young hairdressers starting out?
Put your ego aside. You can learn from every hairdresser, every client, and every situation. The terrible ones are even the best teachers. Dream big and work hard.
IF: Your first three thoughts if you hear the word “hair”?
Beauty, emotion and individuality.
IF: What convinced you about Iles Formula?
I fell in love with the texture, the smell and the instant results. I really appreciate working with Iles Formula.
IF: What else would you like to see from Iles Formula? Or, are you happy with the product portfolio?
IF: Which trends from the past would you like to see again in the near future and why?
Lately, I found myself staring at some ancient Greek statues. These eccentric updos on a catwalk would wow literally everyone.
IF: We thank Marcus and ask you to check out this fun video below to take a sneak peek of the glorious day Iles Formula was welcomed to the colorbar.
