Embrace Your Natural Curls

There are many reasons why you should embrace your natural curls.  The obvious reason, is because right now Curls Are Back!  So there is no better time than now to embrace your natural curls.

The next reason is because it is healthier for your hair to wear it curly.  There is less use of heat tools, and less shampooing of hair, which can all affect the performance of your curls.

Another reason to embrace your curls is because it can be a major time saver in the morning.  Let's face it, the last thing we want to do in the morning is spend an hour or more styling our hair.  Anyone with curly hair is familiar with this, and it will be a refreshing change to free up some of this time for other priorities.

Overnight Curls

If your inspired by the fact that Curls Are Back, but find that time is an issue for you in the morning, then overnight curls are a must.  This is also a great option for those wanting to eliminate the use of dryers and irons.  Keep in mind, curls left to form while you sleep will have a different formation than those styled with your diffuser. Overnight curls will have more of a lived in, not so perfect shape.  Meaning, you may see some straighter pieces and some pieces where the corkscrew shape is more defined, as seen below. We love overnight curls because they are a great way to wear curls that look effortless and cool.

Working from our list above, here is a great way to get those curls working for you while you sleep.

1./  Start out using our Iles Formula Shampoo in the shower.  After rinsing, follow up with our Iles Formula Haute Performance Conditioner, apply to the mid length and ends first, and use our comb to distribute the conditioner evenly throughout the hair.  Curly hair is typically dry and very thirsty.   Our Shampoo and Conditioner is perfect for providing that dose of hydration that your curls need.  Rinse your conditioner, but leave a bit behind, as conditioner left on curls will help them perform even better.

2./  That t-shirt in the list was not for you to wear.  Use a t-shirt instead of a towel to dry or remove excess water from your hair.  T-shirts are much softer than a regular bath towel, which is better for your curls as they don't cause frizz.

3./  Use either your fingers, or our Iles Formula Comb to gently comb out your curls.  Avoid using a brush or small tooth comb as it will stretch the curl and change its shape.

4./  Finally, our Iles Formula Finishing Serum is the perfect product to prep your hair with as it eliminates frizz, and helps manipulate the curl into formation as well as keeping the curls hydrated.

5./  When applying the product, work your way from bottom up to top in sections.  This ensures that the product is evenly distributed throughout for best results.  While applying the product to each section, take one inch sections and twist them, alternating the direction of the twists.  This helps to encourage the curl and sets it while you sleep.

6./  After you have finished applying and twisting, all you have to do now, is avoid touching your hair.  It's a good rule of thumb with curls to leave them alone until they are at least 75-80% dry.  This will allow them to dry in place, and eliminate the curls from becoming frizzy.  When you wake up in the morning, your curls will be ready to go.  Use a small amount of Finishing Serum to open up the curls and form them to your liking.

The results depending on the type of curl you have should be similar to the ones below, a bit more natural and easy.

Curls With Heat

Curls for the most part are pretty easy to do.  However, sometimes you have the type of curl pattern that can be inconsistent.  This does not mean you can't wear your curls, it just means it may take a little more manipulation on your part.  Curls with heat are also a good option for those that prefer their curls to look a bit more uniform.  Here are the steps for obtaining beautiful curls with the used of heat and tools.

1./  To begin, start out by following all of the steps from the overnight curls instructions. Next, grab your diffuser and hair dryer, and a chopstick.  Why the chopstick?  We recommend using a chopstick to feed the hair into the diffuser instead of using your hands.  This will prevent the curls from unraveling and also eliminate frizz.

2./  Set the dryer on medium speed, high heat, and focus on the root area first.  If you start with the ends, they can become over dried and lose their hydration.  After the roots are dry, then work into the middle to ends of your hair with the diffuser. When the hair is about 80% dry, switch to cool air and finish drying with cool air to add softness and shine to the curls.  This also prevents frizz from happening.

3./  Finally, when the hair is completely dry, if you have areas of your hair where the curl did not take, or you just prefer a bit more detail, take your curling tong (iron), and use it to fine tune your curls.  Select haphazardly pieces here and there and add a more defined curl ... don't over do it or it will look tonged instead of natural.

Second Day Curls

Since curls are back, we cannot stress the importance of not washing your hair every day if you have curls. It is best to allow the natural oils of the scalp to help keep the curls hydrated, and washing the hair every day can prevent this from happening.  What happens when you wake up and your hair is all over the place? No need to worry, because a light mist with water and a refresh of our Iles Formula Finishing Serum will help bring those curls right back to life.

If you find that you don't need to re saturate, then you may only need to do a quick touch up with the curling tong (iron).  This may be enough paired with our Finishing Serum to detail the curls.
