Let's chat about hair!
IF : Tell us what you think is the biggest challenge in a hairdressing career today?
KH : I feel pretty lucky. I love my agent and get to work with talented makeup artists and stylists. I used to do cut and color in the salon and once I started doing freelance, that went out the window as it was too hard to manage both. So I do cuts here and there on the side in my garage turned "Babe Cave".
IF : What’s the most enjoyable part of your current job?
KH : I love being somewhere different everyday. It really keeps things fresh and exciting. But above all - helping women to feel their most confident and beautiful is the most rewarding.
IF : Why did you choose the path of hairdressing?
KH : Ever since I was a little girl, I loved doing hair. I wanted to braid everyone's hair in preschool, then French braid in middle school and then style for formal and proms in high school. When I found out it was a career path I could take - I just knew I wanted to explore it. I started Cosmetology School my senior year of high school and completed the rest of my hours at Paul Mitchell Costa Mesa. I was 19 when I graduated and I moved straight to LA to pursue my dream.
IF : If you had not made the decision to be a hairdresser what would you have been?
KH : I loved the Food Network as a kid. I think I would’ve wanted to be a chef or a teacher.
IF : What is your greatest strength?
KH : I wish someone else could answer this one for me! I love natural beautiful styles and braids. Also, I think for the most part, I can read the vibe of a room and adapt.
IF : Your favourite hairdressing tools?
KH : I love my 2 inch curling iron! It is the perfect tool to either "fake" a blow dry or to polish one off. I also always use my Dyson blow dryer and Harry Josh 1 inch curling iron. My Ibiza round brushes and my Sheila Stotts hair brush are also staples in my kit!
IF : Tell us about your relationship with Iles Formula. How you discovered us and which formula is your favourite?
KH : I was referred to Iles Formula by Violet Grey. I tested the Haute Performance Shampoo and Haute Performance Conditioner out on myself and that day people were asking if I had just gotten my hair colored. And the smell! While using the product, I felt like I was treating myself to something extra special. It feels (and is) luxurious. Then the Haute Performance Finishing Serum is amazing because it is not heavy but tackles any unwanted fries and hydrates. I am obsessed with it all!
IF : New Hair Trends ; Is there something happening with hair right now that is exciting you?
KH : I have been seeing some natural curl texture happening. It excited me because that has not happened for a long time. And what hairstylist doesn’t love volume and texture?
IF : What was your worst hair moment and why… privately or on set or in the salon?
KH : When I was in Cosmetology School, I swore that I wouldn’t do anything drastic. I had an a-line bob at the time and about 3/4 through school, I had one of the guest speakers cut my hair. I walked out of school that day with 7 inches less (a very short pixie cut) and platinum blonde hair. It was shocking for me and everyone who knew me. But strangers would stop me about how "amazing" my hair was. I don’t want to say this was my worst hair moment because it was a cool style, it just was not my personality. It was good to do something so different.
IF : If you could cut and colour anyones hair, who would it be and why?
KH : Blake Lively? Or I would say Jemima Kirke (although I think she just did a big hair change). They both look to have the most beautiful natural base for blonde.
IF : Where do you pull hair inspiration from?
KH : I most often pull from Pinterest. Also, I often try things on myself and play to come up with new types of braids to up dos.
IF : Your 3 favourite Instagram feeds?
KH : My brother. He is one of my favourite human beings and SO talented. He paints and I could just sit and watch him for hours. Check it out @shaneheathart.
IF : Your advice to young hairdressers starting out?
KH : Be a yes person. I think saying yes in the beginning sets you apart and ahead. Also, try it all… Cut, color, styling, and see what speaks to you. Whichever you’re most passionate about is where you’ll be most successful.
