Curly hair is thirsty, and if you think about what you do when you are thirsty...You drink a glass of water. So when your hair is dry, which curly hair tends to be, it lacks moisture hence it is thirsty. So what you need to think about, are products you can use to hydrate your curls. Look for products that say hydrating or moisturizing. Like a glass of water for your hair, our shampoo and conditioner are packed with hydrating benefits. On top of that, sulfate-free, paraben-free, and silicone-free are all features and benefits in repairing any kind of dryness. To learn what products, tools, and techniques will give you perfect curls keep reading along.
./ Step 1 begins in the shower. We already mentioned the importance of a hydrating shampoo and conditioner to dehydrated your curls, so it is important to start your journey here. Using proper shampoo and conditioner is game-changing when it comes to the performance of your curls. Make the investment and you won't be disappointed. In the case of very long hair when rinsing one can leave a slight residue of conditioner in the hair ends. Remember it's food for hair!
When showering, be sure not to rough up the cuticle while you're washing. Rinse the hair "down" instead of "back." Always comb the conditioner through, this will probably be the last time you comb your curls so do it thoroughly. When you get out of the shower, refrain from mussing your curls with a towel. Instead, lean over and squeeze the water out so that you're holding the curl in place. Rough drying with a towel creates frizz, and we don't want frizz.
./ Next, don't use regular household bath towels for drying your hair. With curly hair, typical bath towels will create frizz, so switch to a microfiber towel instead and you will instantly notice a difference. Iles Formula Hair Turban is the perfect option and was designed with curls in mind. It is extra-large in the bonnet and length to accommodate easily long hair. The extra-absorbent microfiber has a very soft cashmere type finish on the inside not to scratch the hair shaft. An added button and loop system is genius so the turban never falls off. Every detail was thought of for curls and more.
./ Once you remove the turban the curls should be just about perfectly formed. If you need to adjust any sections wait until you have applied Curl Revive and reform with your fingers to remove the problem areas. This will help to eliminate stretching the hair too much which can lead to areas where the curls do not want to form.
./ It's now time to apply your products. The best serum out there for nourished curls is Curl Revive. This product was formulated especially with curls, waves and frizzy hair in mind. Read the reviews Curl Revive will wake up the curls and really help to encourage the curl formation. Curl Revive comes with two types of applicators, a spray for finer hair or less application, and flip-top for more coarse, thick hair or to utilize more product.
./ If your curl is looking good simply spray on Curl Revive and infuse or allow to dry naturally. If your wave needs some coaxing start by sectioning your hair working your way from the bottom up. Apply Curl Revive then take one-inch sections and twist the hair in the direction of the natural curl pattern. Place that section down and move onto the next. Continue up the entire head until you have twisted all of the hair. You will find Curl Revive will make hair very supple and help you form a good movement.
./ After you have coaxed the curl into place, you can then allow the hair to dry naturally, or begin to diffuse your hair. If you allow the hair to dry naturally, try to avoid touching the hair until the hair is at least 90% dry. Touching the hair too soon can result in frizz. If you choose to diffuse, again it is recommended to use your hands as little as possible. You can use a chopstick to feed the hair into the diffuser. We prefer the Dyson diffuser, it's ionic preventing static and dries hair fast.
./ While diffusing, once your hair is 90% dry, switch the temperature on the dryer to the cool setting and finish diffusing on the cool setting. This will help lock in the moisture and eliminate the hair from feeling dry.
./ Once your hair is completely dry, take a look and see if there are any areas where the curl is resistant and not forming. If this is the case, you can take a curling iron that matches the size of your curl pattern and spot curl only where it is needed. Keep in mind, you can also use this technique day 2 and 3 if sleeping on your curls has caused them to lose formation. Spot curling is a great technique for touching up any areas that have lost curl. Oh and never mind about the extra heat Curl revive has heat and humidity protection.
./ Keep in mind, if it has been a while since you have worn your hair curly, it may take some time before the curls "work" well for you. Just have patience, follow these tips and techniques every time you wash, and before long your curls will bounce back to normal. Always remember though, thirsty curls will never perform to their highest potential. Keep your curls always hydrated for the best results.
