IF: Tell us what you think is the biggest challenge in hairdressing today?
The biggest challenge in hairdressing today is getting noticed. That is because everyone now is on social media and because salons are doing so much education, clients are able to find the best of the best.
IF: What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?
I love seeing clients have a complete transformation. We talk to a lot of clients who say they are never able to get their ‘goal hair’. To have these clients come to our salon and have myself and our stylists work on them and to see the smile on their face at the end is worth all the hard work.
IF: Why did you choose the path of hairdressing and was it easy to fall into this work?
When I was trying to decide what to do. I thought about getting into the hair industry. One day my friend called me and said she was signing up for hair school so I thought to myself.. ‘why not’. So to be honest I fell into it by chance.
Quickly after graduating from school, I found that there is so much satisfaction in working with people and helping people become more confident.
I would not say this is easy but it is well worth it. I have been told and I love the analogy that hair dressing is a 4 year degree. Meaning, you are in school for 2 years, 3rd year you are assisting and working long hours but learning a lot. Then your 4th year often stylists get on the floor, but it is still a year of learning. Then it is truly starting that 5th year after your 4 year degree where you feel comfortable and start to build a clientele. In my case I assisted for 3 years but that was more common 20 years ago
IF: If you had not made the decision to be a hairdresser what would you have been?
In the fashion industry for sure.
IF: What is your greatest strength?
Hard work and hustle.
IF: Your favorite hairdressing tools?
Babyliss 1 1/2 curling Iron
Ibiza blow-dryer and brushes
Hattori Hanzo Sheers
IF: Tell us about your relationship with Iles Formula. How you discovered us and which formula is your favorite?
I love all of them. The Shampoo, Conditioner & Serum. I feel like they all work together to make my clients hair silky and smooth. I went to Jay Edwards from Edwards and Co in Australia came to Habit to shadow me and told me how much he loved the product so I knew I had to try it!
IF: What was the most challenging job you ever made?
I had a famous influencer who came to me with green hair. It was a full 2 day process. The first day we spent the whole day using decolorizes and then the next day finished the process of extensions, coloring, and cutting.
IF: What was your worst hair moment and why…. Privately or on set/stage or in the salon?
My worst hair moment would have been the first client I did at beauty school. She sat down and she had a FULL head of lice.
IF: If you could style anyone’s hair, who would it be and why?
I would love to do Brittany Spear’s hair because she is an icon.
IF: Where do you pull hair inspiration from?
Everywhere, obviously a lot of it comes from social media. Also from movies, magazines etc. I even pull inspiration while seeing peoples hair as I walk down the street. I am always looking at peoples hair. :)
IF: Your advice to young hairdressers starting out?
BE passionate about doing great hair. Money can't be the main focus. Work hard at perfecting the craft.
