IF: Tell us what you think is the biggest challenge in hairdressing today?
RS: I’d say the biggest challenge is finding apprentices these days. Unfortunately we struggle with this and I don’t understand why someone wouldn’t want to get into this amazing and fun industry?
IF: What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?
RS: Definitely the most rewarding part of my day to day job is watching a client come in unhappy and feeling unattractive, and within a few hours I can see there whole demeanour change and they feel sexy and confident. You can’t put a price or an award on that type of gratitude.
IF: Why did you choose the path of hairdressing and was it easy to fall into this work?
RS: Honestly I fell into this industry by mistake, I was training to be a chef and wasn’t loving being stuck in a hot sweaty kitchen, so a girlfriend from school asked if I wanted to work with her at a salon and I said yes!
IF: If you had not made the decision to be a hairdresser what would you have been?
RS: When I was younger I truly wanted to be a flight attendant, I was obsessed with planes.
IF: What is your greatest strength?
RS: My greatest strength is working with a team and to be an educator.
IF: Your favorite hairdressing tools?
RS: I’m in love with the Beachwaver tong.
IF: Tell us about your relationship with Iles Formula. How you discovered us and which formula is your favorite?
RS: I had the pleasure of meeting Wendy about three years ago when she came into my salon to talk about her product Iles Formula. I was SOLD! I’d say my favorite is Iles Formula 2 the best conditioner to date.
IF: What was the most challenging job you ever made?
RS: I would say that was my first cover shoot with Cream magazine, we were on location at the beach and the generator wasn’t working so I had to style the models hair with the heat from inside the van vents from inside the car!! Crazy when I think back, but it made the cover.
IF: What was your worst hair moment and why….privately or on set/stage or in the salon?
RS: I can clearly remember one of my most unpleasant moments would have been working on the Voice and styling Connie Mitchell from Sneaky Sound system and I was using a clip on fringe for one episode but they were rushing her to set and pulled her away from me. Needless to say the fringe was not straight on national tv. Very humiliating.
IF: If you could style anyones hair, who would it be and why?
RS: I would love to get my hands into Carine Roitfeld's hair. She rocks.
IF: Where do you pull hair inspiration from?
RS: I’d say most of my inspiration comes from the incredible and edgy editorial spreads in magazines like Luomo, V, Love,ID, and An Other.
IF: Your advice to young hairdressers starting out?
RS: My advice to anyone starting out in the industry is to learn the word YES. This will get you everywhere. I said yes to every opportunity from colour seminars, style classes, cutting courses, assisting on any jobs and staying late whenever I was needed.
IF: Thank you Remington for sharing with us and for being part of this weeks Hair Talk.
