Rita Ora

Working with Rita was a real treat. She arrived on set in London at Spring Studios with her sister Elena and her agent. Rita’s Mum came in toward the end of day to watch us work.After discussing the story direction with the Elle team and photographer Thomas Whiteside, Rita did a fitting with the stylist Anne Marie Curtis and once clothes were decided we got started on hair. Some 20's inspiration

I was asked to find inspiration for an editorial story I'm about to work on . I believe the photo on left by Man Ray was created by marcel waving and the photo right by Lillian Gish is naturally wavy hair that has been set in rags. Whats extra special about the Man Ray is the pose. If the model was posed standing or sitting the hair would be a triangle shape , and possibly less interesting. Daisy Chains

Do you remember daisy chains ? For those of us in the northern hemisphere, spring is upon us and the daisies are in bloom. A perfect accessory for the long lace dresses of this season. Thinking of Patti Smith and how much her cool haircuts from the 70's often inspire my editorial work today. I recently fell across this interview that I really liked. Stick Straight

I can remember from my school years - before straightening irons became famous - laying my long locks on the ironing board and having my best friend press them straight for me. This Irving Penn's photo from 1964 shows the process perfectly. I had the opportunity to train under Vidal Sassoon, the Master hairdresser from the 70's who took the cutting of a bob to a whole new other level. His technique requires such precision using smaller blade scissors for small snips creating exactitude.Below right (photo by Felix Lammers ) is a bob cut i did inspired by the famous Louise Brooks' bob from the 1920's. I love the way Alexa Chung does her braids. Her color is also super interesting. You could braid in a colored extension if you are not up to coloring permanently your hair. This is a very fresh and sweet style for spring.
